Cooking Buddies.
Problem.
Choose a children's toy that is clearly marketed toward a specific gender and then rebrand that toy in order to make it gender-neutral.
Solution.
For this project, I actually strayed a bit from the original problem and made it a bit harder on myself by choosing a video game. I did this because this was a video game that I had played when I was younger that I always felt uncomfortable saying that I liked because it was a game that was more marketed for girls. The original game was called Cooking Mama so I decided to overhaul that and call the rebrand Cooking Buddies. In order to do this, I had to create from scratch 2 new characters to be featured in-game and on the covers as well as completely changing the wording in marketing and on the packages themselves. These changes to the text and wording were made in order to be more inclusive. The characters were the most difficult part. I am not necessarily a character illustrator, this was actually my first attempt at character illustration. I tried to not stray too far from the original style, but I needed to make sure that my characters were gender-neutral. This is a hard concept to work with but I did this by just mixing and matching features and using color to my advantage, while also adding some elf ears on the characters just to take the human element off of them just a bit.
